The history of all the universities of the world indicates that the universities were based on religious institutions or schools and compiling their history revives their identity as scientific and cultural organizations. At present, all the world’s renowned universities, through the formation of museums and the collection of history and the creation of oral history, seek to establish the connection of the present generation with the past and to fulfill their mission of creating culture and promoting it.
Medical University of Isfahan MUI, which is one of the largest universities, and perhaps one of the universities that can be considered at least one of the five largest universities in the country, has a long, rich heritage. This legacy, which may not exist in any university in the world, is the existence of a universal figure in medical sciences, philosophy, astronomy and other sciences of his time named Avicenna who taught in an Isfahan located school called Avicenna School in 403 A.D. Thus, it can be said that medical education in Isfahan has a 1000 long history.
This bright and shining historical background is not known to many people and the new generation in any country reaches a sense of identity, self-confidence through a connection to historical roots. As Isfahan can be considered one of the pioneers in the establishment of new medical education and the providing of new health services, therefore the logo of MUI has been designed in such a way that the founding date of the university is printed as the year 403 AH, to say, since1024 AD.
The initiation of official, modern medical practice in Isfahan in modern era began in 1946 with the formation of the Higher School of Health. In ten years, two faculties of medicine and pharmacy were formed in Hezar Jerib lands and were the cornerstone of founding University of Isfahan. With the formation of the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, the university was separated in two; Medical University of Isfahan (MUI) and the University of Isfahan. In fact, it was the beginning of a vast and dramatic change in MUI and it has also created valuable and exemplary experiences in implementing health-promoting projects, scientific innovations, research activities, and development in infrastructures.
In order to reflect the development history of MUI, it was decided to design a customizable, multimedia web to create a reliable source for referrals that reflects the records of the health services and education systems due to its long history. The main sources available are autobiographies from which some historical facts can be extracted. As the website is organized in a multimedia platform (film, photo, audio and text), it provides a great way to break up walls of text and gives a visual representation of whatever information it is sharing.
Much attention has been paid to the use of oral history as a new research and interdisciplinary method. In fact, oral history is a valuable research method in the field of collecting and recording information for historiography. This is done through audio or video interviews and then indexed, documented and used.
The website consists of three main parts:
- The Foundation History: emphasis on the initial foundations of physical structures and development programs for education, research, and health care
- Medical Centers and Schools: the process of creating infrastructures for health care services and existing schools of the university
- Lasting Experiences: successful programs in the fields of education, research, health care services and other services that have special prominence or have caused change in the social welfare
